When picking my cool stuff, this time I looked for videos that combine old traditional music with new "hip" music. There's a lot of really neat stuff out there that does this.
This video is ridiculous! The best thing about this video is that the guy making the didgeridoo noise is from China. When I first found this, I didn't realize it was "Australia's Got Talent". I know this might be stretching it a little, but this guy sounds exactly like a didgeridoo to me.
Now I know as women we like to multi-task, but this guy is good. I don't think I could do anything like this. My favorite part about this video is that the guitarist isn't just strumming. He is actually playing a complicated finger picking part. He looks pretty calm while he's doing this, unlike most women when we hardcore multi-task like this.
I had to throw a funny one in there, but this video really does portray the new verses old theme. It still has the Arabic beat to it and the outfits are obviously trying to stick to that, too. This is similar to American pop music in the fact that there are some harmonies and also some English lyrics. You might ask how I found this wonderful music video? I literally typed in "Arabic Pop Music".
I hope this inspires you to start your own YouTube exploration of old traditions intwined with new ones!
The digeridoo beatboxing was SO COOL!!!!!!! I find it so fascinating that a human voice can make tha sound... The guy playing the guitar AND digeridoo has some serious skills!!! And it sounds awesome too. :)
ReplyDeleteAnyone who can play the digeridoo and guitar is extremely talented. Anyone who can play both at the same time is just incredible!!! and I love that it's called "Didge Fusion" :)
ReplyDeleteThese are some great video's that you found! I actually enjoy the Arabic pop music.I also LOVE combining traditional culture with modern. I thought it was funny that you found a video from Australia's Got Talent. So great!
ReplyDeleteWow! These video's were really great. I loved the first one with the didgeridoo beat boxing - it really did sound like the clips of the didgeridoo we listened to in class. The second video was amazing - that guy is seriously talented! The video of the Arabic pop music, although very different to the music we listened to in class still had a few characteristics that we discussed in class.
ReplyDeleteThese videos are so cool!!! I was amazed at how that guy could make those sounds, and I was also super impressed with the "multitasking" guy! I could never do that - EVER - so it was all the more impressive. I really liked the last video too; it was really cool, especially the juxtaposition of Arabic and English lyrics.
ReplyDeleteI've got to say, that Didgeridoo Beat Boxing is flipping amazing. He sounded so much like a real didgeridoo! And William Barton is a boss at multitasking.

These are really cool videos Lyds! The beat boxer is totally on it, and it makes it 10 times cooler because he’s from China. I think that multitasking on guitar is just outrageous. I can’t even play while looking at my hands. He is amazing. And I loved your Arabic pop music find! It was interesting and I am still deciding how I feel about it! Great job Lydia!
ReplyDeleteYou would not believe the number of ways I've seen the didj played this evening as I've been grading Cool Stuff Blogs--it's unbelievable. It's interesting--the fellow playing guitar and didj at the same time reminds me of when Bob Dylan would play guitar and harmonica at the same time.
ReplyDeleteAnd, believe it or not, I tried typing in "Arabic Pop Music" when I was figuring out what to play for our class last week. I have a hunch you could also type in "Habibi"--it's a term of endearment that seems to pop up in pretty much every Arabic pop song I've ever heard....
That didgeridoo/guitarist guy is really cool. I don't think I could play both at the same time. And the music goes really well together. That Arabic pop music video is really awesome. It actually reminds me a lot of India. Not necessarily the music, but the dancing and how well they blend pop music with traditional things.
